Kahkewistahaw Land Base
In 1881, 46,720 acres (73 square miles) was surveyed out for Kahkewistahaw. On January 28, 1907, a surrender took place of 33,281 acres, which left the Band with 13,439 acres or about 21 square miles (amount excludes Reserve 72A, a 96 acre fishing station). In 1963, 4,924.6 acres were returned back to the Band.
Our First Nation presently manages approximately 19,174.6 acres, which includes:

General History:-
The Kahkewistahaw First Nation Recieved 46,720 acres of reserve land under Treaty No. 4 (IR 72). The survey of this land was completed in August 1881.

On January 28, 1907 the First Nation surrendered 33,281 acres of IR 72, as a result of government pressure on the First Nation.

From the surrendered land, 28,356.40 acres were sold in two sales; one on November 25th and 26th, 1908 and the other on January 10th, 1910.

The remaining portion of the surrendered land (4924.6 acres in total) was returned to reserve status in December of 1963.

On December 18th 1997, the government of Canada accepted the First Nation's claim for negotiation.

On November 25th 2002, the Kahkewistahaw First Nation held their Ratification Vote, and succeeded in ratifying the proposed settlement of 94.65 million dollars as compensation for the surrender and loss of use of 33,248 acres of reserve land taken in 1907.

Official signing ceremonies took place at the Kahkewistahaw complex on June 25th, 2003.
